A MERCHANT NAVY or MERCHANT MARINE is the fleet of merchant vessels that are registered in a specific country.  Seafarers of various ranks from different nationalities work on merchant vessels.
Those are interested in pursuing a career in INDIAN MERCHANT NAVY, there are various courses for them to enter into Merchant Navy. Based on their educational qualifications one can choose the course which is suitable for them and can take admission.
Merchant Navy Courses after 10th.

Educational qualifications:
A pass in 10th standard with minimum 40% overall and at least 50% marks in English.
Age limit:
Maximum age limit is 25 years at the time of commencement of course.
Course duration: 6 months

What is IMU?

Indian Maritime University (IMU) is a Central University, Providing quality education in the maritime field. It was established by the Indian Maritime University Act 2008, on 14 November 2008. So, 14th November is celebrated as ‘IMU Day’ every year. It has campuses at Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai, Visakhapatnam and Cochin. Its headquarters is at Chennai and has jurisdiction all over India. The main objective of the Indian Maritime University is to facilitate and promote maritime studies, training; research and extension work with focus on emerging areas of studies like oceanography, maritime history, maritime laws, maritime security, search and rescue, transportation of dangerous cargo, environmental studies and other related fields. The University has 35 affiliated institutes.

What is IMU-CET?
 IMU-CET is a common entrance test conducted all over India by IMU for selecting candidates to Undergraduate courses. It is also known as MERCHANT NAVY ENTRANCE EXAM.
IMU-CET is a Computer based CET exam consisting of 200 Multiple choice type questions. Exam duration is of 3 hours.

Eligibility Criteria for UG programmes (DNS, B.Sc Nautical Science, and B.Tech Marine Engineering).

1. Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS): 10+2 with 60% marks in PCM aggregate or 50% marks in the final year of B.Sc. with physics in any of the years of B.Sc. or B.E. / B.Tech. Degree and 50% marks in English either at 10th or 12th or at graduation level. Candidates should not be more than 25 years at the commencement of course.

2. B.Sc Nautical Science/B.Sc Maritime Science/B.Sc Shipbuilding & Repair: A candidate should pass 10+2 in the Science stream with Physics, Maths and Chemistry (PMC) and should have obtained 60% of marks. He/She should have obtained a minimum of 50% of marks at 10th or 12th standard. Candidates should be between 17-25 years of age at the time of commencement of the course.

3. BE/B TECH MARINE ENGINEERING:
(1)  Pass in (10+2) or equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English as separate subjects with a PCM average of not less than 60% (Or)
(2) Candidates can join 2nd year of 4-Year Marine Engineering Degree Course who have passed 3 years Diploma Course in Mechanical / Marine / Electrical / Electrical and Electronics from the colleges approved by AICTE or State Board of Technical Education with minimum 55% of aggregate marks in the last year of Diploma Course.

Physical Fitness:

Candidate to take admission in marine courses (DG, Shipping-approved courses) are required to produce medical certificate issued by authorities authorized by Director General of Shipping. Candidates with Disability (DA) are not eligible to take admission in marine courses. The candidate must be physically fit and should meet the medical requirements as specified by DGS guidelines.

Eye Sight:

Candidates joining DNS, B.Sc. (Nautical Science) & B.Sc. (Maritime Science) degree course are not allowed to wear glasses and their vision should be 6/6 (normal) in each eye separately.
Candidates joining B. Tech. (Marine Engineering) degree course, glasses may be allowed but eye sight in each eye beyond plus/minus 2.5 will be rejected. Unaided vision should be 6/12 in both eyes minimum or 6/9 in the good eye and 6/12 in the other eye minimum.
 Color blindness is not permitted.

IMU ADMISSION PROCESS:
All admissions to the various UG and PG programmes of the IMU and its Affiliated Institutes will be through All-India Common Entrance Tests (IMU-CET) conducted every year, usually in the month of May/June. For Diploma in nautical science (DNS COURSE) it is conducted twice a year (i) May/June. (ii).Dec/Jan.Qualifing in IMU-CET is mandatory for getting admission in IMU Campuses or IMU affiliated institutes.
There will be a Separate Common Entrance Test (CET) for the MBA programmes. Another Common Entrance Test (CET) for the M.Tech programmes.
Candidates who are shortlisted based on CET scores will be called for Counselling at designated IMU Campuses and will involve verification of original mark sheets and certificates, physical fitness clearance, and allotment of seats in the IMU Campuses or Affiliated Institutes.
NOTE : Admissions to Diploma in Nautical Science leading to B.Sc. (Applied Nautical Science) programme in Affiliated Institutes are open only to “sponsored candidates”, (Sponsored candidates are those who has given Sponsorship test conducted by shipping companies/manning companies and got qualified in the test and have the company sponsorship letter).

Merchant Navy courses after Graduation.
1. Graduate Marine Engineering (GME)
Graduate Marine Engineering (GME) Course is a one year Pre sea Training course for Graduates those who have completed BE /B Tech in Mechanical Engineering or Naval Architecture. GME is a course leading to Class IV Marine Engineer Officer Certificate of competency, awarded by the ministry of shipping Government of India, after six months of sea service, enabling the cadets to become Marine Engineers on board Merchant Navy Vessels (Ships) anywhere in the world. GME Course is the gateway for Mechanical & Naval Architecture Graduates to enter into Merchant Navy.

Eligibility:

A Candidate should hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical & Automation Engineering after attending a course of 4 years duration from an UGC recognized University and or approved by AICTE, with a minimum marks of 50% in the final year; and a minimum 50% marks in English language at the 10th or 12th standard or in Degree Examination.
The Maximum age limit for an admission to the One Year GME course is 28 years.

COURSE FEES:
3 lakhs – 5 lakhs per year.
Course Duration: 1 Year (2 semesters).

2. Electro Technical officer (ETO):

A Candidate should hold Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical & Electronics Engineering (EEE) or Electronics & communications Engineering (ECE) after attending a course of 4 years duration from an UGC recognized University and or approved by AICTE, with a minimum marks of 50% in the final year; and a minimum 50% marks in English language at the 10th or 12th standard or in Degree Examination.
Maximum Age limit – 28 Years.
Course Fees: 3 lakhs- 4 lakhs.
Course Duration: 4 months.

Merchant Navy Recruitment/Jobs.

Placement on board ships is subject to successful completion of Course and passing fresh Medical tests (as applicable) immediately prior joining a vessel.
GP Rating starts the career as an Ordinary seaman and when he gets watch keeping certificate after 9 months of sea service he gets promoted as Able seaman.
DNS/B.Sc cadet starts there career as Deck cadet or Trainee Navigating officer and on completion of required sea service and clearing the competency exams cadet gets promoted to second officer on vessel and further on can grow upto Captain by completing the required sea service and clearing competency exams.
Marine Engineering/GME Cadet starts their career as Engine cadet and on completion of required sea service and clearing the competency exams cadet gets promoted to fourth engineer on vessel and further on can grow upto chief engineer by completing the required sea service and clearing competency exams.
